Birkdale School Sport

Competitive sport is a significant part of Birkdale School life with rugby, football and cricket the main sports in the Christmas, Easter and Summer terms respectively. Rugby Sevens is also available in the Easter term and in addition to rugby the school competes in the Independent Schools Football Cup Competitions in the Christmas term. In rugby, the school participates regularly in prestigious national competitions such as the Nat West Vase and the Rosslyn Park Sevens Tournament. Cricket is of a high standard, with the U15 and U11 teams recently Yorkshire Champions, and the U13 and U12 sides South Yorkshire Champions. A full programme of fixtures against other independent and maintained schools is currently offered. Cross-country, tennis, basketball, netball, golf, table tennis and hockey fixtures also take place. Other sports are also available for pupils to participate in.

Birkdale has a 30m Sports Hall and a fully equipped multi-gym facility and weight room. The Castle Dyke playing fields are situated 3 miles from the school and provide a good number of rugby and football pitches, two cricket squares with artificial strips and a MUGA training area together with a superb pavilion. The school also utilises many of the other excellent sporting facilities that are situated in Sheffield and the Peak District.

The Role of Sports Assistant (Boys’ Games)

  • Job Description

Role Overview: As part of a team of teachers and coaches you will provide coaching predominately in rugby, cricket and football during the school’s Games programme and during after-school practice sessions. You may also assist with the selection of school teams and supporting and officiating at the fixtures. The majority of this work will be with pupils in the 11 - 18 Senior School, but with a small proportion involving 7 - 10 year old pupils from our Prep School. You will report to the Director of Sport.

Role Responsibilities

  • Coach rugby, football and cricket to a high level in term time to boys aged 7 – 18 including after-school practices.

  • Assist in the selection of school teams and the administration and organisation of school teams.

  • Support, attend and officiate at fixtures, by mutual agreement with the Director of Sport, including Saturday mornings when required.

  • Assist other colleagues to enhance the Games provision at Birkdale School.

  • Person Specification: Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential:

  • Be enthusiastic, reliable, punctual and well-organised.

  • Be able to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within Birkdale School and with colleagues in other organisations.

  • Be able to relate effectively to parents.

  • Display commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people.

Desirable:

  • Hold coaching qualifications in relevant sports.

  • Have referee experience/qualifications in relevant sports.

  • Be able to demonstrate up to date knowledge of coaching techniques.

  • Be able to demonstrate successful experience of coaching rugby, football and cricket with boys aged between 7 and 18.

  • Be able to work within organisational procedures and meet the required standards for the role.

  • Be committed to continual personal and professional development and be reflective and able to learn from past experience.

  • Be resilient and demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure.

Interviews are scheduled for week commencing 5 February 2018

The interview process will involve:

  • an interview with Mr Bob Heaton – Director of Sport

  • observed short practical session with a group of pupils

  • interview with Dr Paul Owen – Head Master

Interview candidates should arrive at Birkdale in their sports gear, and anticipate being with us for approximately 90 minutes.
