Melbreck is working with a leading Design and build specialist who create Sustainable Green Spaces and Buildings throughout the UK from their hub in Oxfordshire.

Du to sustained sales growth and a demand for their services they are looking for a lead designer to join their architectural team on a permanent basis ASAP.

The Lead Designer is responsible for the planning, technical problem solving and design for structure, shell and turn-key projects, and for providing training and mentorship to more junior members of the team.

Working with the Structural Lead Designer you will deliver a fully coordinated package of technical drawings, information and specifications for each project.

Key accountabilities:

·To act as the design lead for designated structure, shell and turn-key projects with a focus on - but not limited to - architectural design and technology.

·To act as the hub for design liaison between the clients and their professional team, consultants, sub-contractors, approval bodies etc. including attending, actively participating in and - where required - leading design team meetings.

·Architectural design - responsible for the architectural design process from scheme proposals, through planning, building regulations and detailing, to on-site construction making appropriate consultant appointments as necessary.

·Estimating - support the sales and estimating teams in the preparation of tender submissions with mark-ups and technical advice.

·Technical problem solving - resolution of engineering, material, detailing and building performance queries by suitable investigation, discussion and clear communication of outcome.

·Working with Design Coordinators to provide design for manufacture and site operations information using appropriate software systems.

·Specification - provide product and service specifications to support procurement and site activities.

·Materials take off and scheduling including the identification of key lead-times for critical components.

·Planning & programme - ability to manage multiple projects to reliably hit deadlines and project milestones to support project delivery to the client on-time, in-full.

·Provide support - to provide support to more junior members of staff, and the wider business when requested.

·Communication - liaise with internal & external key stakeholders to ensure timely information flow, clarity of delivery from consultants and subcontractors and appropriate engagement with site and factory based parties.

·Quality control - to check - as part of an ongoing quality control process - other design team members work.

·CDM - ensure consideration of safety and build-ability is integral to the design process, that risks are designed out wherever possible and that residual hazards are effectively communicated to key stakeholders and site based teams.

Qualifications and Experience


Design experience in architectural practice or property developer environment, specifically residential design

In-depth knowledge of UK Planning Rules and Building Regulations

Understanding of the principles of good project management

Thorough knowledge of the CDM Regulations

AutoCAD user with demonstrable 2D/3D experience

Good Microsoft Office skills


HND/C or Degree in architectural technology/architecture OR demonstrable equivalent experience.

Visualisation skills

Experience/knowledge of timber frame construction

Client facing skills

Project leadership

Car driver

Ability to coach others

Appropriate CSCS health and Safety card
