JOB TITLE: Librarian

SALARY & BENEFITS: Grade 6 (£17,891 – £19,939 per annum)

WORKING HOURS: Full-Time, Term Time + 1 additional week, 37 hrs per week

Based in Shropshire, our client moved in to their new school in September 2010, with state of the art facilities. The Library includes the main library collection, a careers library and a range of the latest technology including computers and iPads. The area is open to students throughout the school day, 08.00-17.00 hours.
The Library is at the centre of our Literacy drive with Accelerated Reader resources being at the heart of this initiative.

There are opportunities for team teaching and for accommodating visiting speakers for more than one group, with a 90 seat lecture theatre available on the ground floor. All teaching spaces have interactive whiteboards (‘Smartboards’) and we have various devices available to support curriculum delivery including laptops and hand held devices.

Purpose of the Librarian Post:
  • To assist students and staff to make effective use of the library and other information resources.
  • To assist teachers in selecting books and other learning materials to resource the curriculum.
  • To organise events and activities to promote reading and encourage Library
    use i.e. run ‘book of the week’, advise students as to appropriate reading age books, promote positive use of ICT, etc.
  • The school utilises the Accelerated Reader programme and the Librarian plays a key role in the development and success of the programme.
  • To liaise with teaching staff in promoting effective information retrieval skills during research lessons.
  • To manage Eclipse - the automated library system – and maintain student borrower records and other statistical records,management of requests and reservations and notification of overdue books.
  • To undertake day-to-day oversight of Library IT equipment including housekeeping routines, first level system support, liaising as necessary with the school’s IT Department to ensure effective operation of systems, logging and pursuing faults until they are resolved.
  • To uphold the school’s E-Safety Policy.
  • To maintain library stock, including any collections of relevant newspaper and periodical articles or other ephemeral materials.
  • To issue, shelve and return books.
  • To select and order new books.
  • To receive and check deliveries, passing on invoices to the Finance Administrator for payment as appropriate.
  • To prepare new books and other learning materials for library use, including
    cataloguing and classification, and to repair damaged books where appropriate.
  • To catalogue and classify archive material.
  • To take responsibility for the display areas within the Library area
  • To organise various aspects and initiatives of the Library such as “World Book Day”, the Carnegie competition, etc. this may involve working with other school librarians across the area
  • To collate, edit and publish The Edge Newsletter 4 times each academic year in time for Open Evening, Christmas, Easter and following the Y11 Prom.
  • To maintain a safe and stimulating Library environment, including supervising pupils’ use of the facility.
  • To be aware of and act upon relevant school policies and in particular those associated with Child Protection/Safeguarding Children. Literacy and Reading and Health and Safety issues.
  • To take responsibility for personal professional development, keeping up-to-date with relevant research and developments.
  • Any other duties which may be reasonably regarded as within the nature of the responsibilities of the post, including cover at one of the school’s other Resource Centres.
  • Engage with students both inside and outside the Library to promote reading and literacy.
  • Deal with publisher representatives, visiting authors and book club leaflets, etc

Although the Library is used extensively and is very busy as certain times of the week, there are also periods of virtual inactivity. Demand for the use of the Library is very unpredictable and the Librarian will need to be flexible in their approach to this demand.

Person Specification for the role of Librarian
  • Previous library experience essential.
  • Professional qualification in librarianship, information management or information science desirable.
  • Knowledge, understanding and competence in ICT including library management systems.
  • Experience of communicating with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Effective and confident verbal and written communication skills.
  • Used to working as part of a team but also able to work alone.
  • Behaviour management skills.
  • Previous experience of working with young people.
  • Ability to prioritise, organise and time manage own workload.
  • Be punctual and flexible
  • Be able to demonstrate high standards and commitment to providing a quality service
  • Be enthusiastic, committed, have a willingness to learn and be a positive team member
  • Ensure that the Every Child Matters agenda is adhered to

Qualifications, Experience and Skills;

We are looking for an adaptable, enthusiastic and capable person who can demonstrate an ability to get on with a wide range of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. It would be helpful if you have proven experience of similar work although this is not essential. Some basic computer skills such as use of Word, Excel, email and the internet would be an advantage. Training will be provided as and where necessary.
Knowledge of ebook library providers and ability to integrate ebooks into library provision.

Hours of Work & Salary;

37 hours per week. 44.12 weeks per year. Normal hours of work would be 09.00 to 17.00 Monday to Thursday and 09.30 to 16.30 Fridays, although the applicant will need to be flexible to attend occasional evening events throughout the year.

Grade 6 (£17,891 – £19,939 per annum). Salaries are paid in equal monthly amounts with appropriate pro-rata holiday pay entitlements included. The salary for this post will reflect the responsibilities involved and the experience of the appointed candidate.
