Optical Development Engineer

Optical Development Engineer needed to join a leading laser spectroscopy Instrumentation Company, who are developing and taking cutting edge instrumentation technology developed for space exploration to market.

As a Optical Development Engineer you will be required to:

Develop and design of a laser spectrometer product. This will require knowledge of laser physics, optics and electronics.
Work with and manage external contractors to develop and improve optical/ opto-mechanical analytical system to meet business objectives and customer specification
Provide support for all stages of the product development lifecycle: R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, and Field Service.
Carry out Systematic experimental studies and associated error modelling and failure analysis to determine and understand measurement errors and system performance criteria.
Conducts basic-to-advanced laser and/or spectroscopy-based research related to new or existing technologies, product applications, or new products.

To be considered for the role of Optical Development Engineer you will need to:

Have engineering experience in areas of bulk optical measurement systems and instrumentation (UV-VIS or near- and mid-IR range) from concept to design with a mind-set of production transfer. Areas of competence include opto-mechanical technologies, with electrical hardware and/or software signal analysis and controls. Ideally with some knowledge of spectroscopy and tunable diode laser spectroscopy.
Be educated to a minimum of MS in Optical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, E.E., M.E. or equivalent work experience with optical-based analytical instrumentation and project/personnel management experience.
Have several years’ experience designing optical, mechanical-optical, electro-optical, chemical, or spectroscopic systems for process control instrumentation. Low light level detection technology experience is desirable..
Have strong organizational and project management skills are required. Works well in a dynamic, cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment.
Have strong hands-on design skills in a relevant engineering discipline for an opto-mechanical technology with significant electrical hardware and software signal analysis and controls.
Have hands-on experience of working in a lab in development and design of optical / infra-red products
Be proficient with modern design tools to support some elements of mechanical, optical, statistical, electrical, etc… engineering is expected. (e.g. IDL/ MATLAB, SolidWorks, rPV.WAVE, MS Windows / Unix, Fortran or C).
Be proficient in the use of standard Microsoft Office tools.
