ELG Carbon Fibre Limited (ELGCF) is a wholly owned UK subsidiary of ELG Haniel Group, headquartered in Duisburg, Germany.  ELG is one of the world’s leading specialists in handling and recycling high-value raw materials for the stainless steel, superalloys and carbon fibre industries.

The goal of ELGCF is to facilitate the use of carbon fibre in emerging, high volume applications, by converting manufacturing waste and end-of-life components into cost effective, carbon fibre structural materials.

We make no secret of our global expansion plans which include the launch of additional overseas facilities and with this in mind, we are looking for an experienced Composite Design Engineer to join our committed team. The role will be based in our offices in Coseley, West Midlands.




General Description / Purpose of Role:

To undertake and be responsible for the analysis and design of materials and composite components to support the Company’s customer applications across a variety of industrial markets.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Produce design solutions for new products and product modifications;
  • Developing load environment specifications from launch documentation, analysis and test data;
  • Finite element modelling of composite components and structures;
  • Refining finite element models to obtain agreement with experimental data;
  • Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers;
  • Maintenance of design records and configuration management;
  • Managing the design process of composite materials throughout the product life cycle
  • Liaison with the Technical department regarding product development requirements;
  • Working to project plans and liaising with programme management;
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business;
  • Proactively share and develop your composites knowledge to support new technology development within the business;
  • Maintain a flexible approach to carry out additional/other tasks within your competence;

Minimum Education Qualifications:
  • Bachelor level engineering degree.

Minimum Previous Experience:
  • A demonstrable knowledge of design principles for composite materials as well as their manufacturing processes;
  • Experience in the design of components and assembled or integrated structures;
  • Experience of 3d modelling and advanced surfacing;

Minimum Additional Training:
  • Experience of using an FE package and associated software tools


Minimum Required Skills:
  • Good understanding of the role of carbon fibre composites in high volume and/or high value end-use markets would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience of composite processing methods;
  • Self-motivated and proactive in solving issues;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work well with colleagues, customers and external collaborators.
  • Excellent team working skills. Ability to work within cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills—ability to provide clear and concise reports as required.
  • Good presentation skills—able to present to Senior Management, customers and partner organisations.
  • Business acumen—able to communicate the business case for product development in financial terms.
  • Good organizational skills.
