Our client based in North Hertfordshire is seeking a talented, motivated and ambitious Software Engineer to join a growing R&D team. You will have a strong background in developing complex Windows-based software solutions and demonstrate proven competence in C# coding using Visual Studio. Previous experience of developing industrial control systems, graphical user interfaces, and image processing applications is highly desirable. Some experience of non-Windows industrial software development using embedded ARM and Atmel processors and PLCs would also be beneficial. The Software Engineer will have the support of a strong team but will need to be able to take responsibility for driving projects ranging from bug fixes to new-feature development through to completion. You will be heavily involved in the development of existing company solutions and in contributing towards next-generation product software development, and will ideally be someone who is focused on creating robust product solutions from scratch. This role will appeal to an individual with a passion for designing complex software solutions, who is not afraid to take on new product development challenges, and who is keen to develop the skills required to progress to senior roles. The Role: Develop PC-based Windows applications in C#/.NET systems across the full product life-cycle - design, implementation, testing and support. Provide maintenance and technical support for existing products to ensure prompt rectification of problems reported by users, both internal and external. Create and execute comprehensive testing and debugging plans for software quality assurance prior to release. Work with R&D and production teams to implement fixes and upgrades for existing systems. Contribute and adhere to the software development processes and tools used in the company. Develop PLC and embedded C/C++ solutions Experience and Qualifications First or second class degree (2.1 minimum) in Computer Science or Software Engineering from a reputed university. Any relevant certifications in C# and .NET development will be a bonus. Experience of developing solutions for ARM microcontrollers in C/C++ is desirable. 3 - 5 years experience in developing applications in C# on Windows using Visual Studio. Strong understanding of industrial control systems and their implementation in code. Design of simple and intuitive graphical user interfaces for industrial applications. Knowledge of industrial communications protocols such as MODBUS, Ethernet, CANbus. Experience of working with different software development methodologies such as Scrum, Agile, Kanban, Waterfall. Experience of using version-control and bug-reporting software such as Subversion, Trac, GIT, TortoiseSVN. Experience of PLC programming (e.g. Allen-Bradley or Wago) and/or embedded C/C++ for ARM MCUs will be an advantage. Any experience of creating image-processing software will be an advantage. Willing to lead small-to-medium scale projects and work with a wide range of technical and non-technical people. The role requires someone with initiative, good communication skills, attention to detail, analytical and innovative thinking, and the ability to thrive under pressure.
