Two positions – a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade 6) and a Fellow (Grade 7), are available for outstanding and ambitious surface engineers to undertake research in the field of ‘Innovative Materials Processing Using Non-Equilibrium Plasmas’, particularly in Vacuum Plasma Processing of advanced engineering materials with focus on development, characterisation and evaluation of novel coatings and treatments based on PVD methods such as electron beam or sputter PVD, or atmospheric plasma systems. You should have, or be very close to completion of, a PhD or equivalent in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics.(Grade 6 post) and should additionally have experience in postdoctoral research with strong track record of publications (Grade 7 post). Expertise is essential in plasma processing methods such as plasma-assisted PVD and the characterisation, evaluation and analysis of the coatings and surfaces produced by these methods. Examples of pertinent characterisation methods are SEM, TEM, XRD and EDX. Mechanical evaluation expertise is desirable in instrumented indentation. Experience in the evaluation of protective (e.g. tribological and anti-corrosion) properties is also sought. Candidates should be capable of working under their own initiative and leading or working in a small research team, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.
