Research Director, Chemistry & Materials Science (Biotechnology Applications) Full time / Permanent, Cambridge UK Competitive remuneration package which would include a generous equity grant, annual bonus scheme, pensio n plan, private healthcare and more Illumina is seeking a Director with vision and experience to guide a highly technical Chemistry & Materials Science team within our Consumables Development department. The team is responsible for developing and sustaining the chemical materials and related processes that power Illumina’s DNA sequencing and sample preparation platforms. The team is also tasked with application, deposition, and characterization of molecules, compounds, and surfaces. As a successful candidate, you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment to create genomic analysis consumable devices that enable leading-edge medical research. You will be a leader of integrated and multidisciplinary teams developing new, and improving existing nucleic acid sequencing and sample preparation technology platforms. Responsibilities: • Lead a multi-site team of 20 Ph.D. level scientists commercializing chemistries that enable breakthroughs in DNA Sequencing technology. • Participate in setting and communicating department strategy to support company vision. Establish team goals in the context of the strategy. • Identify new technologies. Propose initiatives, lead, monitor, and evaluate success of initiatives to implement new capabilities. • Define and implement process and structure changes necessary to scale the department by understanding future need based on company direction. • Create new roles to meet future department needs, and grow a team that can adapt to the evolving needs of the organization, as the illumina expands the clinical market in DNA sequencing • Mentor managers within the department, and provide coaching to leaders within project teams from other departments. Provide training for the Chemistry and Materials team. • Establish credibility and effectively influence executives and peers across the organization through clear and concise written and oral communications. Collaborate effectively across departments and sites, creating an environment of mutual trust. Preferred Educational Background: PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, Nanotechnology, or a related field. Preferred Experiential Background: Competitive candidates will have 15 years of industrial experience. An ideal candidate will have Industrial experience in Chemistry that could include (but is not limited to) nucleic acid chemistry, surface chemistry, polymers/fluoropolymers, separation science, bio-conjugation, formulation, nanomaterials, and/or semiconductor chemistry, quality management standards / systems (e.g ISO, FDA). Advanced understanding of metrology and surface characterization techniques, solid mathematics, statistics, and experimental design, is also a plus. Candidates should also have demonstrated the ability to overcome technical challenges at the interface of physics, biology, chemistry and materials science in a fast-paced, environment within an interdisciplinary team setting, and possess demonstrated expertise in leading resolution of multi-disciplinary, cross-departmental technical and managerial challenges.
