Our client is a leading manufacturer and technology innovator; providing solutions for security printing, brand protection and document security. A newly created role has arisen to drive forward modernisation of ink systems and processes across the UK manufacturing sites. Based in Southern UK, there will be significant travel, up to 40%, to other manufacturing sites. The Ink scientist will be responsible for collecting and gaining knowledge relating to the use and application of ink. Examples of the range of ink related activities they will become involved in are: actively participant in make or buy decisions for special effect inks advice and support to product development activity on ink related matters supplier selection selection of specific inks for particular/unique applications Responsibilities: Additionally, the ink scientist will work collaboratively with production management to ensure that best in class ink management systems are in place. They will take the lead in setting-up systems and develop methods to ensure that ink formulation, colour management, QC processes and record keeping are well organised and standardised across the manufacturing sites. Work will include the use of both ink blended at production sites and also incoming raw materials and ink bases. The role will be responsible for developing processes to standardise colour matching and control the proofing of ink formulae to ensure that manufacturing sites are supplied with formulae which accurately match the wet ink samples used for proofing. The role requires management of relationships with a wide range of groups including staff at remote locations and liaising with site management, external suppliers and contractors. Candidate profile: Significant experience of ink formulation (resin/solvents/pigment selection) Significant experience of QC test methods for finished inks Significant experience of colour management and control (ideally in a print workshop environment) Systematic and process orientated, with a structured approach to problem solving Experience of setting up the systems used by a print factory based “ink kitchen” or QC lab or similar with successful record of development of test procedures or processes Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with a wide range of different stakeholders Ability to understand complex manufacturing processes and the influence of the physical and chemical properties of ink on product quality and production efficiency Good understanding of security print design and production processes. Experience in a similar role, ideally with an R&D or ink background would be an advantage Excellent colour discrimination and the ability to distinguish subtle variations in shades in a Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue colour vision test Good analytical and data manipulation skills with the ability to interpret complex issues simplistically Chemistry degree, or equivalent Lean Six Sigma qualification is desirable Computer literate with a thorough understanding of MS Office packages including Excel, Project and Visio. Experience of databases is desirable Ability to travel for up to 40% of the role holders time is required due to the need to closely interface with the factories.
