Lead User Experience and Product Design Job Description As our client enter the next exciting phase in their growth, the company is looking to build its product development capabilities and so they are seeking an exceptional individual to lead the User Experience and Product Design efforts as part of their highly creative Research and Development team. The Lead User Experience and Product Design's primary responsibility will be for the development of mechanical and user-focused elements of the company's diagnostic reader systems, both laboratory based and point-of-care. The role will be key to new product development and will include the gathering of requirements, planning, executing and documenting mechanical, user focused design and development, prototyping, testing and implementation as well as involvement with ongoing support and optimisation of already commercialised products. As part of a highly creative multidisciplinary team, the role will complement the existing expertise within the company. The key tasks and responsibilities of the role will include: Lead engineering design, development and testing of diagnostic systems, both consumables and instrumentation Concept ideas, problem solving and translation into world-class solutions Analyse and resolve often ambiguous or conflicting requirements Definition of technical requirements as part of system specifications Follow gated New Product Development process from concept to product launch Verification and validation of design solutions using prototyping to characterise performance, either in isolation or as part of a full system build Generation of documentation to support New Product Development process Engineering support for manufacturing and QA groups as required, including creation of test fixtures and generation of detailed process instructions for production transfer and launch Work well within a small but multidisciplinary team Skills & Competencies . Capable of solving complex mechanical engineering problems and realising the solution in a cost- effective way, suitably aligned to the level/complexity of manufacturing envisaged. Experienced at taking a product from a conceptual sketch, through design of mechanisms, with analysis and calculation, to the last detail with injection mould toolmakers; a SolidWorks maestro, with experience of working through complex tolerance analysis issues. An exceptional conceptual thinker, who is used to working in multi-disciplinary teams, with software and hardware engineers, assay scientists, micro-fluidics experts, quality and manufacturing teams - to deliver diagnostic systems with world-class sample handling and preparation solutions, together with readers with the level of intuitive GUI solutions that are now taken for granted in mobile electronic devices. Ideally this person would have a bio-medical engineering qualification and must be used to working in ISO13485 regulated environments. They are looking for someone to deliver truly user-focused solutions, so they need an individual with a real passion for ethnographic research and carefully considered user-experience mapping. Someone with their ear to the ground with evolving trends and emerging technologies and the ability to think laterally and apply these in new areas. This individual also needs to be able to communicate at all levels within the organisation, helping to shape product development strategies, as well as being able to build strong, lasting relationships with suppliers, making key component selection decisions within the context of product lifecycle analysis. Prior experience in the field of IVD Medical Device Readers, with an understanding of associated medical device regulations, standards and work practices would be advantageous.
