Mechanical Support Technician The Schools of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Computer Science at the University of Manchester are highly-dynamic, world-leading teaching and research environments. This is an opportunity to meet the evolving needs of the School and the mechanical workshop. You will provide technical support to enable the construction, maintenance and installation of mechanical equipment within workshops and laboratories, in order to support both teaching and research requirements of the School. You will provide technical assistance for undergraduate teaching specialised student projects and all research work and commercial contracts. Utilising specialist technical knowledge and experience in engineering, you will liaise with staff and students to develop, manufacture and construct components in order to meet their needs in research, teaching and learning, and to advise on / or assist in the design of these components as is necessary. You will have a background and broad experience in the use of necessary technologies, e.g. conventional machine tools and equipment or CNC technology, to deliver the constructions required to the standard of precision specified by the end-user and to exercise judgement regarding the correct methods in order to achieve this in the most effectively manner. With the ability to maintain, calibrate, modify, service and repair workshop equipment and machinery, you will also ensure stocks of required consumables are maintained. You will train or instruct other staff and students in the use and maintenance of equipment as required, and undertake limited supervision of other staff as required. A sound understanding of all relevant Health and Safety policies and procedures is essential, as is the ability to take responsibility for others working either as students or junior staff. You must possess a Degree / HND / HNC, Level 4 NVQ qualification or a recognised apprenticeship in a relevant subject area, with significant post qualification work experience, or substantial work experience in a relevant technical role. You will also have a demonstrable ability to understand and interpret technical requirements and excellent analytical and problem solving abilities.
