Main Role As a senior scientist you will have the opportunity of helping to shape our clients' growing offering in applied science, bringing insight into where your technical skills can be applied to their clients' commercial needs. The role will require you to provide technical leadership in multi-disciplinary team settings, working on a range of client assignments and internal technology investments in a wide range of commercial sectors. Responsibilities Scientists, mathematicians and engineers work on client assignments in multidisciplinary project teams - usually working concurrently on multiple projects, often in different team roles. High quality work is essential from every team member, and a strong ability to identify, select and implement appropriate solutions given different market/commercial requirements is essential to the role. As a senior materials scientist/applied physicist you will be responsible for providing expert input on materials and chemistry-based solutions, covering project aspects from materials compatibility through to product formulation and chemical process engineering as part of a multidisciplinary development approach. Working within interdisciplinary teams you will be required to take a fully hands-on approach to development in project teams where the boundaries between the roles of scientists and engineers will be regularly blurred. Projects often commence with a loose brief from a client; from this you will be expected to extract and understand the underlying requirement, and be able to architect a technical solution that is both good for business and a compelling offering for the client. During the delivery of the project you will be expected to take responsibility for the technical solution, working closely with the project team, as well as interfacing at a senior level within the client organisation. Requirements The successful candidate will bring their own particular combination of skills, but we would require: A good first degree or PhD in physics, materials science or closely related discipline Experience of product development in a fast moving organisation Proven technical leadership experience in a commercial environment An understanding of key principles in the physical sciences, and an ability to identify their applicability to a variety of technical challenges Some familiarity with design considerations arising from associated engineering disciplines (for example electronics, software or mechanical engineering) Excellent practical problem solving skills Good communication skills In addition, any experience of the following will be beneficial: Experimental/laboratory skills, particularly building experiments involving fluid transport and controlled reactions with aspects of inline measurement and monitoring Practical use of laboratory techniques such as miscroscopy, spectroscopy and sample preparation for techniques such as GCMS, FTIR and HPLC Experience with data analysis and presentation in Excel and/or Matlab. Knowledge of techniques such as PLSR, PCA, DOE and ANOVA an advantage Automation and control of experiments (e.g. VBA, LabView, Python or other software) Experience with any simulation/design/CAD tools (for example Solidworks, Zemax or ANSYS) This job was originally posted as
