Due to continued growth, an opportunity has arisen within our busy Engineering team in Yeadon, Leeds. We are looking for a dedicated person with a strong background in Electro-mechanical engineering. The lead engineer in the electro-mechanical field is responsible for continuous improvement of the existing products and development of the new creative product designs liaising with external and internal stakeholders to drive innovation in this field. There will be multiple tasks/projects running in parallel requiring focus and flexibility to switch to the highest priority as and when required or as determined by the available resources. Key responsibilities:- 1. Responsible for the design and creation of a variety of key departmental facets. a) Design housings of electronic equipment on 2D/3D CAD. b) Create 3D models for concept visualisation, proof of mechanical design integrity and manufacture purposes and produce 2D mechanical detail drawings of 3D parts to industry standards for manufacturing purposes. c) Create product prototypes. d) Responsible for design and development of mechanical test rigs, ensuring the overall product design specification in terms of electrical and mechanical functions are fulfilled. e) Ensure that design factors such as weight, cost, strength, power usage, noise, form & function, manufacturing, assembly and service life are all taken into consideration for all new designs. f) Work with key suppliers to produce mechanical designs – fabrication and metal work. 2. Test new & existing products and use analysis to review and improve product design. a) Take responsibility for the safe construction and commissioning of production test rigs. b) Perform destructive testing on products. c) Initially support product testing after a production grade product is released. 3. Create and manage product documentation such as: engineering reports, technical files, product manuals, troubleshooting guides, manufacturing and test procedures. a) Maintenance of design files such as Schematic, PCB BOM and mechanical documents. b) Generate production build packs, producing general arrangement drawings and models, detailed manufacturing drawings, the creation of accurately populated BOM’s and perform change requests and validations. c) Produce high standard engineering and production drawings from existing products and bring existing drawings/designs up to date. d) In-field trialling of new products. 4. Miscellaneous a) Responsible for development tools and equipment maintenance and the training of other employees in their correct use. b) Participate in cost reduction activities relating to product design so that product profitability is maximised. c) Provide fast engineering solutions to design challenges and be able to react quickly to problems that may occur at all stages of the development process and through to production. The above tasks are the key aspects of the role but, like any other role, it is not possible to specify every single task and requirement of the role and you are required to carry out any reasonable task required of you. Internal relationships:- A good team player that works well within the Engineering department as well as across the other functions of the organisation – especially Test & Production, with the ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate initiative. External relationships:- Able to communicate effectively with customers and at times visit customer/partner sites to participate in product development. Close communication with suppliers when working on new designs and to ensure that prototype parts are sourced in line with the project budget and timescales. Competence:- a) Essential (i) Strong background in mechanical designs and basic understanding of analogue electronics. (ii) A positive “can do” attitude towards addressing assigned issues and projects that is capable of delivering results under pressure to strict deadlines (iii) Detail orientated and used to working in a fast paced, changing environment (iv) Dedicated, hard-working and well organised with a quality focus and willing/able to continually learn and improve skills b) Desirable (i) Experience of working with 3D model software such as SolidWorks and Creo or similar 3rd party software. (ii) Experience of modelling and creating parts using 3D printer. Knowledge:- a) Essential (i) Bachelor’s degree in the related discipline (2:1 minimum) (ii) An excellent understanding of mechanical principles and basic electronics engineering. (iii) Experience of working with AutoCAD 2D drawings (mechanical assemblies, modelling). b) Desirable (i) Advantage to have a working knowledge of JIRA and version control system (SVN) (ii) Experience of using Proteus for schematic and PCB design Skills:- a) Essential (i) Good development, documentation, release and revision management skills. (ii) An analytical mindset in conjunction with creative skills and a flair for design. (iii) Hands on experience of conceptualising, designing and developing electro-mechanical products for manufacture, reliability and ease of use. iv) Experience of designing enclosures/housing for electronic products (Electronic Housing/Packaging). b) Desirable (i) Analogue electronics skills.
