We are looking for a qualified horticulturist to be head gardener at Ryton Organic Gardens, based in Ryton near Coventry. We were awarded the contract in 2015 to run and develop the gardens, since then we have developed the organic gardens to a high standard being awarded 5 stars from trip adviser this year. Ryton Organic Gardens is a chemical free site and all plants are propagated in house, then place for sale. There are areas of fruit and areas for vegetables it is down to Newman Landscapes to manage these in an organic way and create and grow all kinds of great displays. This is a fun position as you will have a blank canvas to work on. Job description Daily running of the gardens and the contract Attending contract meetings on a fortnightly basis working alongside Garden Organic. Designing areas of the gardens Redeveloping some sections of the gardens Daily ground maintenance Managing a group of volunteers twice a week Managing 2 gardeners Propagating plants Composting Delivering and training on tours for schools, you will be provided training from our self’s Managing a budget Ordering materials Managing all H&S Working in compliance with soil association and recording all aspects of growing Job Brief Your daily activity will be managing the aesthetic of the garden with one gardener and one apprentice. You will have a group of volunteers on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday which you have to plan into your working schedule. Ryton gardens is mainly herbaceous plants and vegetables so you will need to know your horticulture and your all aspects of growing. You will need to be able to design crop rotations with companion planting. As this is a tourist attraction you need to be able to display this technique to all the general public. Also you will need to be able to demonstrate organic pest and disease control around the whole of the site. There are Keda Polly tunnels on site this is your chance to develop this area to grow whatever you want to. It has to be weed free at all times in the paths and shrub beds. The grass has to be cut and shrubs maintained, you will need to provide a maintenance schedule for the year including a watering schedule. All designs and crop rotation has to be approved by Garden Organic and get signed off before we can put this into action. Newman Landscapes has all the machines on site to deal with all the maintenance. Once a year the soil association will audit our records, to make sure that all the vegetables we have grown in organic compost and they are organic seeds. No plants are allowed on site unless you have permission from garden organic. All vegetable and produce is to be recorded and you will be provided with a lap top and an office to complete these tasks. We have to provide Garden Organic with vegetables to sell so you will need to grow these and pass them onto Garden Organic. There will be times you will have to give tours this will be split with you and the other gardener, Garden Organic will notify you when this is. Number of tours a week is 2 from April to October. This garden is all about educating the general public and displaying organic gardening at its best. There is a messroom provided and you will have your own office. The successful Head Gardener must be: Qualified horticulturist Passionate about organic gardening Confident to lead a team and a large volunteer base Working Hours are from 9pm – 5pm with 1 hour for lunch.
