Operations Manager Reporting to: General Manager Our Client was established in 1975 and has a proud heritage in steel and related products. They appreciate that nine times out of ten material is required extremely urgently. They therefore run a fleet of over 60 vehicles that are available in your area every day. They cover the largest range of steel sections, tubes, sheets, plates, mesh, stainless, aluminium, brass, copper, plastics. In fact if it's used in engineering they probably stock it. If they have not got it, they will go out of their way to get it for a customer. They have nearly 500,000 square feet of covered warehousing located throughout Eastern and Central England. There is also a deep water shipping terminal. Additional facilities include: Shot Blasting and Painting, Shearing, Folding, De-coiling, Sawing, Profiling, Plasma and Laser Cutting. JOB DESCRIPTION Summary/Objective The Operations Manager oversees management of all areas of Operations to produce products and direct activities so that all inventory and orders are delivered on schedule and within quality and safety standards and cost objectives. Assists company officers and senior staff members in the development and formulation of long and short-range planning, policies, programs and objectives. Develops the daily plan and establishes procedures for maintaining high standards of operations to ensure that products conform to established customer and company quality standards. Achieves optimum employee levels with least amount of overhead and raw material costs to meet annual budgetary plan. Formulates and recommends policies and programs that guide the organisation in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation. Provides timely management reporting with agreed KPI's Directs and monitors department managers and charge hands to accomplish goals of the daily delivery plan, consistent with established company and safety procedures. Acts as liaison between department management/subordinate levels, as well as executive/department manager levels to inform personnel of communications, decisions, policies and all matters that affect their performance, attitudes and results. Hires, trains, develops and evaluates staff. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy. Ensures compliance with current statutory and safety regulations. Consults with Human Resources Department as appropriate. Identifies, recommends and implements changes to improve productivity and reduce cost and scrap, monitor scrap and offcuts. Directs the establishment, implementation and maintenance of production standards. Directs and coordinates various programs essential to operations procedures (e.g., training, safety, housekeeping, cost reduction, worker involvement, security, etc.). Initiates and coordinates major projects (e.g., plant layout changes, installation of capital equipment, major repairs, etc.). Perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned and required. Implements and monitors Perpetual Inventory schedules to ensure high levels of inventory accuracy, exceeding 95%. Liaises with the transport department to ensure all vehicles are correctly loaded and despatched on time. Ensures (on night shift) that all vehicles leave on time and highlights any issues immediately when vehicles are unable to perform appropriately. Competencies Leadership Performance Management.
