Reporting to the Global Head of Product and Operational Efficiency in RDD, the Electronics Cost Engineer is responsible for understanding and managing the evolution of manufacturing cost estimates for new products in development; and identifying opportunities to reduce and optimise these costs across the complete product life cycle. In this role you will liaise closely with Engineering, Procurement and Manufacturing both in the UK/Europe and Far East to advise on final cost of production for new product development, and drive and support the adoption of best-practice cost control and reduction processes. Accountabilities: Scope The role covers all electronics aspects of all Dyson products and includes sensors, signal conditioning, power electronics, digital electronics, microcontrollers, motor drives, mains powered, battery management and wireless modules. Implementation Support projects in building high quality ground-up cost estimates for new projects being developed by RDD. Conduct reviews with Engineering to estimate future product costs and understand the associated risks and opportunities which could impact a product as it progresses through the development cycle. Challenge design teams to meet or exceed cost targets for new product development (NPD). Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Procurement and Finance to agree achievable, but stretching target costs. Target setting is essential and you will also need to drive the teams to deliver at each subsequent milestone once the target is set. Influence product specifications where alteration to specification can lead to a big cost saving through alternative electronics design. Use your experience and knowledge of electronics to influence product, assembly and component design to reduce cost where possible. Your prior experience with other companies including the approaches you have used before will be a valuable asset towards achieving this. Work in close cooperation with Dyson engineering and manufacturing in the UK and SEA to manage and control cost variations along the new product introduction chain. Work with research to understand technology roadmaps and emerging technologies. Actively seek out, and drive the implementation of cost reduction measures to improve product profitability. You will lead the way with this core part of the role steering the engineers in the right direction, helping to prioritise the activity undertaken by the team and highlight how important cost is across the department. Processes Work in close collaboration with Engineering and Procurement in the UK and SEA to develop new cost calculation tools, identify areas for improvement and seek to optimise our cost management approach and processes. Develop better methods of sharing data and information between design and manufacturing teams across all Dyson product categories. Prepare reports to the exec which needs careful consideration and planning. Reviews Represent the Cost Management Team at project milestone reviews. Have a clear understanding of what makes up the electronics cost and what drives any variance to target. Be prepared to answer questions and challenge others at this cross-functional meeting and deliver any cost actions arising. Skills: A degree in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry. This industry experience should include time spent with manufacturing teams and exposure to productionisation of final designs. Applicants should have experience in at least 3 of the following areas: Cost estimation and cost reduction for new product development Liaising with engineering, procurement and manufacturing to determine the full cost of product realisation. Cost estimation for large volume consumer products across the whole lifecycle Process & Tool Development Training Materials Digital hardware design Excellent general knowledge of microprocessors, preferably including ARM Cortex M series and PIC microcontrollers Knowledge of a wide range of interfaces including a variety of serial interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB Experience of analogue amplification, conditioning/filter circuitry Design of OP-AMP stages such as differential amplifiers, integrators Experience of a wide range of sensors such as MEMS accelerometers/gyros, ultrasonic, temperature, optical sensors (proximity, ambient and colour) and VOC Motor hardware and control Design of servo and low power motor drive hardware and control systems Design of brushless DC motor hardware and control system is desirable Power supply hardware Design of switch mode power supplies (e.g. up to 50W) o Linear regulator hardware design The ability to provide technical support and direction to project teams. Good analytical ability and attention to detail including an affinity for numbers. Good interpersonal communication and team working skills, to work in close collaboration with and influence project development teams. Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format to peers and upwards to senior management Inquisitive and challenging nature - be prepared to constructively challenge others in order to fully understand an issue or situation. Not accepting assumptions at face value To be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure, competitive environment in an organised manner Excellent team working and interpersonal skills, building relationships with individuals within the project teams which will be essential to the success of the role This job was originally posted as
