MS BI Architect/Continuous Integration Consultant £500-£600 per day Northampton 3 Months Role: The Charity are looking for someone to define, document and implement a greenfield test and release process based on continuous integration principles. We are looking for someone who has recent and relevant experience having implemented a continuous integration environment using TFS and fully understands the build, test and deployment process in a Microsoft DW/BI environment. The build will cover SQL 2016, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, TFS, MDS, DQS and Dell Boomi across development, system integration test, user acceptance test and production environments. Working with architects, developers, analysts, DBAs and support staff the candidate must be comfortable coaching, mentoring and explaining how this will work, in addition to documenting the process to a high level. The candidate must be conversant across: Skill Requirements: Excellent understanding of various branching and merging models Understand tests that are appropriate in each environment Understand tests that can and cannot be automated Understand the difference between smoke tests, functional tests, regression tests, unit tests, integration tests, UAT tests, infrastructure tests Know how to baseline and recreate environments Know how to generate test data Have knowledge of the governance mechanisms necessary to move from one environment to another Be skilled in application and infrastructure configuration Pragmatic experience in translating high level design into low level design Breadth of experience in data warehousing and business intelligence Continuous integration and continuous deployment experience Understands the difference between best practice and best fit An excellent ability to identify, escalate and mitigate risks Excellent leadership skills Strong technical writing skills, must be able to convey and explain technical concepts in writing and diagrammatic form to non-technical audiences Knowledge of the following would be beneficial: Knowledge of ITIL service transition Data pseudonymisation/encryption experience Previous DBA experience Good understanding of VM Ware, hardware and networking We need someone with technical expertise in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server, specifically knowing how to create build agents, what tools to integrate/use to assist with automated testing. Someone who knows Powershell, someone who has worked in a continuous integration capacity specifically within the business intelligence industry as there are specific challenges to deploying SSRS reports, SSAS cubes and SSIS packages that is different from deploying databases between environments. The challenge we have been having with this role is the duality of the skills needed. We need someone with technical expertise in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server, specifically knowing how to create build agents, what tools to integrate/use to assist with automated testing. Someone who knows Powershell, someone who has worked in a continuous integration capacity specifically within the business intelligence industry as there are specific challenges to deploying SSRS reports, SSAS cubes and SSIS packages that is different from deploying databases between environments. Additionally this candidate needs to have a level of test management in their background, the ability to define a testing strategy, what kind of tests should we be executing in each environment, what a test plan should look like. With these skills combined, that would be able to define the requirements for the test and release process as well as identify the tools required to complete the build and the ability to implement it. This candidate needs to be familiar with working in agile deployments with multiple teams working on multiple products to adequately define a branching and merging strategy to facilitate how code is checked in and then deployed.
