We're looking for a highly skilled Research Programme Manager to join our clinical studies and experimental medicine team based within the research directorate. Our team of Research Programme Managers are responsible for the effective delivery of the charity's varied research funding schemes and management of the current £100m research investment, which includes reporting research outputs and achievements that are vital to Arthritis Research UK's continued success and growth.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Research Programme Manager to oversee our clinical research funding, implement other funding schemes and manage a portfolio of research awards including some Centres of Excellence. This will involve evaluation of research applications to the highest standards of peer review and ensuring that we are funding appropriate clinical research activities.

Using your scientific expertise and judgment gained within a clinical research field, you will have a sound understanding of award management and funding requirements within the NHS and National Institute for Health Research (or devolved nation equivalent) and an understanding the regulatory requirements for conducting clinical research.

The role has a visible presence within the research community, acting as an important point of contact between researchers, the wider research environment and the charity. This role is expected to keep abreast of research developments in order to use strategic as well as scientific expertise and judgment in the development and implementation of research activities.

Working with the research management team, the role also plays a key part in developing and maintaining excellent relationships between the charity and other funding agencies, in particular in the development and management of co-funding schemes.

As Research Programme Manager, you'll:

- keep abreast of developments in clinical research and other assigned areas to help shape the charity's future research funding activities and initiatives
- lead the application and peer review process for clinical research funding schemes and other strategic initiatives
- ensure that Arthritis Research UK funds clinical research activities that are in accordance with government guidelines
- manage a large portfolio of active and recently closed awards, including monitoring, evaluation and reporting on project progress and outputs
- provide information to the research community by being a point of contact and acting act as an authoritative voice for the charity

Key requirements

- a science PhD, MD or similar qualification or an equivalent level of experience in the field of clinical research (experimental medicine, early phase or late phase). You will have experience of conducting clinical research and working in a research environment
- experience of peer review in grant/award management gained either from working in a grant management environment or being a grantee
- professional confidence; the ability to represent the organisation and their sector expertise confidently with a range of contacts
