About the Company

My client is a privately owned company based in Essex. The nature of the business is the supply of modular buildings both new and preowned along with all related services.

Our Products

Our modular buildings are either built from new in a factory setting or sourced secondhand, removed from site and refitted within our depot.

Our Services

The company has in house capability to carry out all the necessary processes involved in the installation or removal of a modular building. Typically all secondhand modular buildings purchased for stock are refitted either offsite at our depot or onsite.

The company provides products and services to the following markets: Construction, Education, Energy, Rail, Infrastructure, Commercial, Military, Aviation.

The Estimator Role

The 'estimator' is a key role within the technical department. The estimator is required to calculate the costs associated with a project that is being tendered or quoted in response to an enquiry.

There is therefore significant responsibility to output accurate and reliable cost figures.

About You

- ü Able to read and understand project drawings to transfer drawing information into a measured and quantified cost spreadsheet

- ü You are prepared at times to work late with colleagues when a tender submission deadline must be hit

- ü You are a team player

Your Experience

You should have at least 2 years recent experience of working in an estimating role.

Direct experience of estimating within the modular building sector would be an advantage but is not prerequisite.

Ideally you will have experience of estimating within a commercial fit out, general building, civil engineering or shopfitting environment.

A working knowledge of building regulations would be advantageous.

Qualifications of Interest (Desirable not Essential)

GCSEs or A levels in a relevant subject such as mathematics

A HNC, HND or degree in a relevant subject including:

- Structural Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Construction
- Quantity Surveying

A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification

A Microsoft Excel course certification

Estimator Work Duties

- ü Understanding what the client wants
- ü Understanding the company product & services
- ü Understanding a scope of works to be costed
- ü Assisting in the sharing of key information between departments
- ü Adhering to established company protocols and procedures
- ü Researching materials, equipment, plant and labour costs
- ü Collecting quotes from materials suppliers and sub-contractors
- ü Assisting with the planning of job timescales by understanding supplier lead-times
- ü Assisting in assessing the levels of risk on a project
- ü Analysing supplier data
- ü Understand exchange rates and market prices
- ü Inputting and outputting data into established MS Excel estimating spreadsheets
- ü Assist in preparing and submitting quotations
- ü Helping with bids for new contracts
- ü Assist in the handover of estimating information on successful project bids to the operations department
- ü Supporting buying activities
- ü Assist in monitoring the stages of a project to make sure that costs are kept in line with forecasts

Career Progression

There is opportunity to develop into the role of 'Senior Estimator' and further on to the potential of heading up the technical department.
