Job Description

Under the direction of the Management Team, to undertake the care and supervision of the children attending the nursery within the general framework provided by Ofsted.

Delegated Authority

  • To be responsible for co-ordinating the needs of individual children as a key person.
  • To provide a stimulating and caring environment for children aged 0 – 5 years.
  • To positively promote and adhere to Nursery Policies and practice in relation to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety legislation, Safe guarding and under the Children’s Act.


  • To be responsible for safe and appropriate use of equipment associated with activities undertaken.
  • Assist in ensuring the maintenance of furniture, furnishings and equipment.
  • Be responsible for administrating First Aid (only if holding an up to date first aid certificate) and one-one care for any ill or injured children both in and outdoors.

Description of activities

  • As a key person, to be responsible for coordinating a child and their carer’s individual needs.
  • Responsible for monitoring the children’s development whilst using our electronical system.
  • Keep accurate and factual records for children.
  • Have the ability to write coherent, concise reports.
  • Be able to collate and present information at case conferences and reviews if necessary.
  • Liaise with other professionals in providing specialised programs of care to meet individual needs of the child.
  • Be able to comfort and reassure a child either on arrival or at any other time of the day, by picking a child up or sitting with them on your lap.
  • During outdoor play ensure you play an active part in all physical activities ie. football, bike play, building and den making.
  • Use an imaginative approach to provide an environment to stimulate growth in physical, intellectual, linguistic, emotional and social development.
  • Create a stimulating environment both individually and in group situations.
  • Play an active part in caring for the children at all levels of play. Sitting on the carpet, at table activities and outdoor play.
  • Promote anti-discriminatory practice as an integral part of your working environment.
  • Be able to challenge discriminatory verbal remarks and behaviour.
  • Encourage Carer’s participation within the nursery and offer support and advice.
  • Have a natural caring approach with all ages of children from 0-5 years, cuddling and picking up the children when required.
  • Provide appropriate activities for children at a level and by a method appropriate to their maturity and requirements.
  • Be familiar with the procedure of fire drills and to be responsible for the safety of the children.
  • Support the children both up and down the stairs ensuring safety at all times.
  • Be responsible for establishing and maintaining a learning environment in which children’s all round development is fostered and in which they are able to make progress.
  • Ensure all children’s individual care needs are met including changing of nappies on a regular basis for children 0-5 years.

Work relationship

  • Create appropriate professional relationships with carers and other professionals.
  • Ratio’s are governed by Ofsted therefore lunch breaks can only be taken at certain times of the day.
  • Seek to establish and maintain relationships within the local community.
  • Participate in training when considered appropriate by managers.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings as required.
  • Work as part of a team in what is, at times, a stressful setting.
  • Participate in individual personal supervision.
  • Be flexible and promote K@W.
  • Continually interact with children to ensue that their needs are met and they are happy and learning from their experiences with you.
