This company is a large independent, family run Garden Centre which includes a Mail Order department that specialises in hedging plants, fruit and ornamental trees. They despatch all year long, but are busiest during winter when they send out bare-rooted plants employing 12 people in their despatch team.

Summary of Role

To be responsible for co-ordinating and managing all processes and personnel involved with despatch and upkeep of their catalogue range of stock. Plants and goods are despatched via couriers, their own van or are collected by customers from the Garden Centre.

To lead by example working hands on alongside the stock receiving, stock management and despatch teams.

Their main mail order season runs from November through to May therefore the job holder and team will have different responsibilities during the summer months. These will include:

- Working with plants team to ensure the correct irrigation of plants
- Working with plants team to ensure the monitoring of pests and diseases on site and ensuring that an adequate preventative spraying programme is in place.
- Working with plants team to ensure the maintenance of the grounds including the control of weeds, planting of display beds, cutting of grass & hedges.
- Being responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of vehicles and machinery on site.
- Helping out in other areas of the Garden Centre.

The holder of this position will be required to deputise as duty manager for the garden centre on a rota basis.

40 hours to include some weekend work.

Skills / Experience:

- Previous experience of leading & coordinating a team of people is critical to the success of this position.
- Good horticultural knowledge and understanding of plants.
- Basic computer skills.
- Previous experience of using fork lift trucks, tractors and spraying would be useful, however training will be given.
