This company is leading the world in developing the first truly digital hydraulic machines. These machines enable the development of hydraulic systems which save energy and reduce fuel consumption in vehicles, and provide novel solutions to challenges in renewable power generation.

As part of a recently awarded multi-million pound project, this company is collaborating with the University of Edinburgh to fund doctoral level researchers to contribute to the development of this unique technology.

PhD topics will include the following types of research activities:
- Mechanical design of complex machine parts.
- Prototype and testing of designs.
- CFD, FEM multi-body and transient magnetic modelling.
- Time domain, dynamic simulation of mechanical systems.
- Development of system control software algorithms.
- Experimental testing of machines on specialised rigs.
- Analysis of experimental data.

The specific research project topic will be decided upon discussion with candidates based on their experience, skills and interests.

A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in an appropriate subject, or relevant qualifications and experience.

Due to funding restrictions, all applicants must fall within the University's eligibility criteria for UK and EU fees, and must be eligible to work in the UK.

A wide range of projects are on offer, there is not one specific skill relevant to all, but of interest would be:
- Mechanical design, build & test of prototypes
- Simulation of dynamic systems
- Data analysis & Signal Processing
- A practical approach and willingness to 'get your hands dirty' is an advantage.

The successful candidates will be full time, permanent employees; also enrolled as PhD students at the University of Edinburgh.

Funding is available to cover the course fees and an additional salary for the 3 year duration of the scheme. The initial salary will be £23k per year with the possibility of annual increments based on individual performance.

The students carrying out this research will benefit from access to test rigs and vehicles, a prototyping workshop and a suite of advanced engineering simulation and design software tools.
