Our client, is an international maritime charity. It has become one of the largest port-based welfare operators in the world working in 200 ports and 50 countries. Our frontline staff visit ships, offer hospitality & engage in a range of other welfare activity. Seafarers spend up to nine months away from home and the Mission offers a friendly face and a helping hand to those in port. 

The charity are now looking for a Port Welfare Assistant to join them at South Shields port. As Port Welfare Assistant you will provide a warm welcome and practical support to seafarers visiting the Centre.

Other duties and responsibilities include:
• Assisting with all operational tasks in the running and maintenance of the Centre facilities and its services.
• Meeting with seafarers, on-board their vessels and responding to any issues or needs they may have. 
• Welcoming non-seafaring visitors to the Centre and dealing with their enquiries as appropriate. 
• Assisting seafarers in meeting any relevant practical needs, including connecting to Wi-Fi and accessing mobile broadband services and money exchange. 
• Providing advice on access to local towns, seafarers centres and other facilities
• Engaging in the ship-visiting programme for at least seven hours a week and providing support for ship-visiting volunteers. Complete all ship-visitor app entries.
• Maintaining the club premises, including cleaning the premises, cleaning and maintaining vehicles, garden, toilets and taking out the rubbish. 
• Assisting in the supervision and development of Mission volunteers.
• Ensuring emails are regularly monitored and respond as required.
• Ensuring all information is kept secure and used in accordance with MtS policy on confidentiality and the GDPR.
• Ensuring that Health and Safety issues are complied with at all times.

You must be able to embrace diversity and be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and a compassionate concern for the welfare of others. You will hold a friendly and supportive disposition with the ability to quickly and effectively build relationships and trust. 
The Charity is Anglican so candidates must be comfortable with the Christian ethos on which the charity is based and be prepared to work in line with it.
Key experience for this role: 
• Hold a full UK driving licence with access to own transport
• A highly motivated self-starter, able to be flexible and to work on own initiative with integrity
• IT literate with great customer service skills
• Ability to work with people from all walks of life and to work in a way which is inclusive and non-discriminatory, having respect for people of all ages, race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality. 
• Be flexible in approach with the ability to adapt quickly and function well in unfamiliar environments.

Visiting ships is a requirement of this role. You will be required to climb gangways with as many as 80, 60-degree steps leading to the deck on board ships and then perhaps a further three floors to get to the bridge.

This is a part-time role, working 16 hours per week, with a salary of £7100 per annum.
The closing date for this role is 1st July 2019 with interviews expected to take place 23rd July 2019.
