The Group Finance team
The Group Finance team is responsible for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all financial-related activities for the business in a way that supports delivery of the Groups strategy to build back the business to profitable growth. Guided by our values, the Group Finance teams sets the agenda for the Groups internal and external close cycle, the standards for financial control and stewardship and the Groups annual and periodic forecasting cycle. The ongoing challenge for any group finance team, and Countrywide is no different, is to ensure that there is a combination of strong technical expertise coupled with a strong understanding of the business.
We have a big challenge ahead of us to do this and the Group Finance team, working really closely with the business, will play a critical role and bring expertise to shape, and ultimately ensure, we achieve our purpose and deliver our vision. Working in conjunction with the Groups business units, the role allows significant exposure across the Group. The role is newly created and it is therefore dynamic, with significant potential to make the role your own, and is capable of being stretched by the right applicant with an appetite to work proactively and create progression opportunities.
The role
The Deputy Group Financial Controller will be a key member of the Group Finance team. They will perform a key role in transforming Group Finance in line with the wider business strategy and vision. They will be responsible for setting the standard for financial stewardship/internal control and both internal and external reporting, delivering the month end close cycle and driving effectiveness of financial operations and the related reporting that can support the leadership team with more timely and insightful information to drive business performance.
The role will also be co-ordinating with our divisional finance teams, across various locations including our offshore financial accounting teams in India, to ensure full compliance with existing corporate policies and continuous improvements of controls and procedures. This will include: consistency of existing processes around the month end close process and formalisation of independent review and integrity; and identifying opportunities for efficiencies in headcount or working capital management.
Examples of what you will be doing:
  • Supporting the Group Financial Controller in the leadership of and management of all Group stewardship and internal and external financial reporting and related financial activities
  • Collaborating on and reviewing monthly management accounts and all external reporting, including consolidated and subsidiary statutory accounts and related audit activities
  • Working closely with the Groups FP&A manager to ensure that there is a robust framework in place to support reporting requirements
  • Owning monthly working capital reporting and KPIs to drive improvements and managing cashflow forecasting, including communication and reporting to banks
  • Improving the control environment, embedding our minimum control standards and ensuring compliance with group accounting policies through regular review and on-going communication, enforced by periodic audits
  • Developing and enhancing a more comprehensive Group Accounting and Finance manual
  • Working closely with other members of the finance teams to ensure a consistent approach is taken to ensure compliance and control in relation to financial activities (notably performance measurement and reporting) at all times that is aligned with the Group strategy and values and integrity of reporting systems for financial and non-financial data;
  • Reviewing group accounting policies and process documentation prepared by the onshore and offshore team to ensure that it is fit for purpose, reflecting technical changes and internal developments
  • Providing independent review to ensure that all monthly balance sheet reconciliations are completed promptly and that unreconciled items are investigated and resolved in a timely manner
  • Promoting and strengthening processes and controls by executing projects and leading on work to identify, develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of process improvements
  • Developing and reviewing performance indicators to detect process improvement opportunities to deploy actions to automate, re-engineer or improve processes; continuously working to manage and reduce operating costs through process and technology efficiencies and being passionate in the elimination of manual work or poor processes
  • Driving consistency, integrity, efficiency and process innovation throughout finance, reporting on activities to senior management, and where necessary to the Group Audit and Risk Committee
  • Lead on performing ad hoc project work including group acquisition accounting, refinancing, etc.
  • Developing the Groups reporting capability and existing systems, specifically to drive best practice across the Group for all financial reporting (internal and external) and to provide commercial financial challenge and business analysis
  • Ensuring treasury controls are regularly reviewed and operate at all times, across corporate and client accounting functions
  • Managing for all head office accounting/plc accounting matters and business partnering activities, including review and submission of budgets/forecasts for the head office entities and liaising with Executive team members to ensure timely review of their cost centre budgets/forecasts and overall review with the Chief Financial Officer
  • Work in partnership with Finance Directors, and Finance Accounting managers and their teams to identify synergies and share best practice, skills, insights and feedback to enhance effective, consistent delivery of financial reporting and control activities to the business
  • Motivating and leading, with particular emphasis on coaching/development to foster a culture of continuous improvement and review of output

Experience you have that will set you up for success:
  • Strong accounting and technical knowledge under IFRS and UK plc reporting requirements
  • Keen attention to detail with a clear understanding of and commitment to robust data integrity and reconciliation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with experience of influencing at all levels (up, down and sideways), whilst also skilfully coaching and guiding others through complex and challenging financial issues
  • Ability to communicate financial information effectively, with clear analytical insights, to both finance and non-finance colleagues and keep stakeholders engaged on execution
  • You will be motivated and enjoy working autonomously and have effective project management skills to ensure deadlines and conflicting priorities are managed
