About the role:
We are currently looking for a Senior Computational Biologist to join the expanding Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (BBS) Team within the Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology (CEP) group and the newly established Manchester Centre for Cancer Biomarker Sciences (MCCBS) led by Prof Caroline Dive CBE. The MCCBS has an international reputation for liquid biomarkers and one aspect of this Team's role will be to evaluate data from DNA and/or RNA derived from patient blood samples to derive robust classifiers that support cancer patient treatment management.
Pivotal goals of the MCCBS are to develop biomarkers that improve cancer detection, aid prognosis, predict and monitor patient responses to therapy with an overall goal to facilitate cancer precision medicine. A flagship project of the MCCBS is TARGET, a clinical protocol in which Phase I clinical trial patients provide a blood sample at baseline and we explore whether ctDNA profile can support selection of the best clinical trial available for each patient. Bioinformatics analysis of TARGET derived clinical samples will be the first priority for this post holder working closely with the Nucleic Acids Biomarkers team within the centre. There will also be opportunities within the BBS team to develop novel algorithms and methodologies.
You should have a degree in computational biology, mathematics or related discipline (or equivalent) plus significant relevant experience analysing genomics data or a relevant postgraduate degree. Additionally you should have substantial experience writing complex code in at least one of the following: Perl, Python, R, Matlab, C, or C++.

On the 26th April 2017 The Paterson Building, which housed most of the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Manchester Institute, caught fire resulting in significant damage. We shall be rebuilding our world-class research facilities and we would like to make you aware that in the meantime, the primary place of work for this position will be at the internationally-renowned life sciences campus at Alderley Park, which has excellent facilities to carry out research. We anticipate that this will be for a few years, after which we will return to our original site in Withington, Manchester, next to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (Wilmslow Road, M20 4BX).
