1. MAIN AIM
The Sustainability Officer will support activities to deliver our plans under SYHA's Climate Change Strategy.
These activities will include but not be limited to:
• Work across different teams within SYHA to collate the data necessary to understand the business's carbon footprint, and to put in place mechanisms for monitoring the same on an ongoing basis.
• Lead the delivery of an Environmental Management System (EMS) to manage the impacts of SYHA's operations. This is an organisation wide piece of work which will touch all areas of the business. It will include:
o Establishing SYHA's significant operational impacts
o Put in place systems and procedures to manage and minimise those impacts. This will involve working with teams across SYHA's offices and depots, as well as more mobile teams, to identify and deliver workable solutions on the ground.
o Build relationships and engage with SYHA's teams to address behavioural impacts.
o Monitor SYHA's legal and other obligations and work to ensure we remain compliant with these.
o Drive continuous improvement in our environmental performance.
o Deliver an internal audit programme and support the needs of external certification visits.
2. SUPPORT DUTIES
The Sustainability Officer will have the opportunity to be involved in support and contribute to SYHA's wider range of activities relating to our Climate Emergency and Sustainability Activities, including to:
• Support activities to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of our existing and new housing stock
• Work with and support our customers to improve their environmental behaviours. In particular, support good energy use behaviours to cut energy use and tackle fuel poverty
• Help to identify and secure funding to support SYHA's Climate Emergency and Sustainability work
• Contribute to planning and progress reports regarding SYHA's Climate Emergency and Sustainability work.
• Work with external partners e.g. National Energy Action, other Housing Associations to exploit synergies and achieve change faster and/or better.
3. OTHER DUTIES
• Where required and as appropriate, the Sustainability Officer will deputise for the Sustainability Manager
• Work with and support the LiveGreen Champions, an employee groundswell movement within SYHA
• On occasion, work as part of a team on other projects not directly related to the Climate Emergency or Sustainability agendas.
• Any other duties that are applicable to the post.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
JOB TITLE - Sustainability Officer (Fixed Term 2 Years)
Salary grade - 4A
Hours - 37
Leave - 27 days annual leave, plus 8 statutory Bank Holidays and 4 SYHA days at Christmas, Easter, Spring and August Bank Holiday (all pro rata). The leave year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
Pension - You are eligible for membership of the Association's contributory pension scheme which is the Social Housing Pension Scheme (SHPS) subject to the trust deed and rules of SHPS from time to time in force. For more details please contact the People Team.
Unions - SYHA recognises Unite and UNISON, with whom the Association has entered into an agreement where union members have negotiating rights in relation to conditions of service.

Location - Based at Rockingham Street, but working at sites across the business.

Professional Know How & Qualifications
• A relevant qualification in the field of Environmental, Sustainability science/management, and/or, a significant track record working in this sector.
• Experience or understanding of the delivery and operation of an Environmental Management System & Domestic Energy Efficiency would be advantageous.
• Must have good numeracy and literacy
• Will have good IT skills including ability to use a wide range of IT packages including Microsoft Office.
Problem Solving
• The ability to interpret data, including the use of Excel spreadsheets, and to present results and conclusions in a business reporting style
• To work through problems 'on the ground' with local teams to develop workable and effective solutions.
Work Related Circumstances
• Should be comfortable working in a team and on their own, including office working, working at SYHA's other sites and working from home.
