The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care promotes the health, safety and wellbeing of patients and the public by raising standards of regulation and voluntary registration of people working in health and care. We are an independent body, accountable to the UK Parliament and working with the devolved administrations across the UK. We oversee the work of 10 statutory bodies that regulate 1.6 million health professionals. We review the regulators’ performance, and audit and scrutinise their decisions about whether people on their registers are fit to practise.
In March this year, Dame Glenys Stacey was appointed by the Privy Council as our new Chair. Following the significant challenges faced by the education system and the exams regulator Ofqual in the face of Covid-19, Dame Glenys was asked to lead Ofqual at this difficult time. We therefore reluctantly accepted Dame Glenys' resignation to enable her to focus all her efforts on her role with the exams regulator in this period of crisis. As a result, we are now seeking an outstanding candidate to replace her. We are seeking to attract a very diverse range of candidates from across the UK.
You will join us at a critical point, during a particularly difficult period for the country and for the healthcare workforce. It’s a challenging time for the health and social care sectors and for how we regulate in systems under pressure, but also offers us a unique opportunity to be at the centre of the implementation of the reform of health and social care regulation. Your personal credibility, strong diplomatic skills and ability to lead the development of our strategy, policy and planning will be central to your work with us. You will inspire and command confidence with our key stakeholders, including the governments and administrations across the United Kingdom, with the statutory regulators and non-statutory registers we oversee, with representatives of highly diverse patient and professional groups, and with other stakeholders.
Our new Chair must have the ability to understand the role of regulation in the delivery of professional services, a demonstrable record of leadership in substantial roles and proven chairing and board level experience. An inspiring leader, who has never been a member of any of the professions to which we provide oversight regulation, you will show a commitment to upholding standards and ensuring good governance and transparency. You will be a visible and motivating leader, exercising diplomacy and sensitivity when required, yet willing to challenge the status quo when needed. You will be an advocate for the Authority’s work. Your integrity, standing and judgement will inspire public confidence in what we do and hold the respect of a diverse range of stakeholders.
This is a unique and influential role in the high-profile field of health and social care. If you can demonstrate the skills required, we encourage you to apply.
The time commitment and remuneration for the Chair is 2 days per week and £34,530 per year.
