1 HOCKEY SPECIALIST, 1 NETBALL SPECIALIST
FROM JANUARY 2021
The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth.
The school is seeking to appoint two sports coaches to the support staff from January 2021. There may be the possibility of an earlier start date during this term if all pre-appointment checks are completed.
We have vacancies for one Netball specialist and one Hockey specialist. The successful applicants will join the PE & Games Department in the Senior School and report to the Director of Sport and to the Head of Netball or the Head of Hockey.
Applications are welcomed from experienced coaches or teachers who wish to coach and take fixtures within a highly supportive and exceptionally well resourced educational environment.
Applicants will have a thorough knowledge of the coaching techniques required to plan, deliver and evaluate sessions against agreed learning outcomes, and be able to stretch talented and/or novice players. In addition, applicants will be well organised and able to establish a firm but friendly relationship with pupils.
The exact hours and pattern of work each week will be confirmed by the Director of Sport, according to the needs of the school’s sporting calendar. The successful candidate will typically coach one afternoon games session and one after school training session each week and take a Saturday fixture. Fixtures take place at our off-site playing fields in Hilsea, Portsmouth and across the region at other schools on our fixtures list.
There is an expectation that during the term(s) when Netball or Hockey is not a main sport that coaches are able to offer pre-season training and in addition offer some support to the school’s wider sporting programme. For suitably qualified applicants there will also be the potential for further involvement in specialist coaching in other school sports. Candidates are asked to advise their qualifications and experience in coaching sports in addition to their specialism.
Although based in the Senior School, there may also be the opportunity to coach pupils in our Junior school, particularly in Years 5 and 6.
It is a requirement of the role that candidates are able to commit to attend regular staff training and / or complete online training courses in important matters relating to compliance such as safeguarding. Participation in these training sessions, which are typically held during Professional Development Days at the start of school terms, will be as advised by the Director of Sport.
Sport at PGS
The Portsmouth Grammar School has a national reputation for the range and quality of its
sport. Many pupils are attracted to the school, not just because of the academic excellence, but also by the reputation we have earned for sporting success. That said, sport for all is of equal importance to us and we are proud of various initiatives that ensure all pupils at PGS have the opportunity to represent the school in some way. We are committed to providing opportunities for all. This means the provision of a vibrant and enjoyable physical education curriculum, a broad and diverse range of co-curricular opportunities and support for those who wish to develop to the highest levels of representative sport. Although our usual fixtures list is currently subject to Covid-19 restrictions, it is not unusual to see up to four hundred pupils in action on a normal Saturday of fixtures.
The Sports Department has excellent facilities; on the main school site in Portsmouth there is a Sports Hall with climbing wall and 5 indoor cricket nets, three squash courts, an athletic development gym, a fitness suite comprising over twenty cardiovascular stations, and a dance studio. Our excellent facilities at Hilsea include the Fawcett Pavilion, four rugby pitches, two cricket pitches, a water-based Astroturf plus a training area, eight artificial and six grass cricket nets and a hard court area of four netball courts or five tennis courts. Pupils regularly use Governors Green in Old Portsmouth and the school enjoys regular access to HMS Temeraire’s excellent facilities that neighbour the main site consisting of a Sports Hall, swimming pool, three artificial surfaces for rugby and hockey and an athletics track. Pupils can enjoy triathlon training and athletics at the Mountbatten Centre, Football at the Roko Health Club, as well as using the Portsmouth Dome for indoor tennis.
We also enjoy a growing partnership with the university and their plans for the development of sports facilities in the near future offer further exciting potential for PGS. There is a vast array of co-curricular opportunities led from within the department including morning, afternoon and after school activities every day of the week.
In addition to fixtures, the department organises a comprehensive touring programme that includes annual pre-season training camps and regular overseas sports tours for the main school sports.
Contract of Employment:
The appointment will be to the support staff of the school from January 2021. The role is paid at an hourly rate, to include holiday pay, and the rate will be dependent upon the coaching qualifications and experience offered by the successful candidates. Sports Coaches submit a monthly timesheet authorised by the Director of Sport.
At the time of the appointment the working hours per week will be agreed within a flexible framework which will include weekend fixtures and may also offer some holiday coaching commitments such as pre-season training. Hours of work will also include attendance at key training sessions for all staff during Professional Development Days and at training sessions offered at other times during the school year.
All conditions of employment are detailed in a separate contract issued by the Bursary.
The Portsmouth Grammar School prides itself on being a caring employer and all staff are encouraged to discuss any aspects of their terms and conditions of employment initially with their line manager and, as necessary, with the Bursar who signs all contracts of employment on behalf of the Governing Body.
The school is always looking for innovative ways to improve the working conditions and remuneration of its employees and welcomes suggestions from all staff.
