Senior Middleware Platform Engineer.

Work location: Warrington/Work from home

Undertake routine and non-routine general build, provisioning, support, maintenance, availability and the life cycle management of Middleware infrastructure and associated software technologies underpinning United Utilities current and future IT strategy. Services include, but not limited to web and application platforms, API gateways, software load balancers, text search platforms, secure file transfer gateways, batch scheduling and orchestration tools, and software developer platforms.

Main responsibilities:

  • Ensure Middleware platforms, associated components and software are reliable and their availability 24/7/365, where applicable.
  • Ensure performance, optimisation and tuning of Middleware and services associated to this role.
  • Subject matter expert for general configurations, implementations and operational requirements.
  • Responsible for the review, approving, maintaining build and configuration, and hardening standards relating to upgrades, new technologies or project delivery.
  • Engage with the wider digital services including IT security, business and other providers/stakeholders to ensure latest policies, patterns and standards are enforced and maintained.
  • Produce high quality design, maintain and support documentation, operational processes and domain knowledge to eliminate single points of failure.
  • Ensuring IT systems and services comply with regulatory and legal requirements like GDPR, NIS directive, etc.
  • Ensure effective security is developed and maintained and developed within Middleware, gateways and associated platforms which meet current and foreseeable business needs in accordance with United Utilities policies and industry security best practice.
  • Ensure existing Middleware, gateways and software components are maintained and backed up correctly (including recovery) in order to mitigate risk of data loss or corruption and insure productivity of the business.
  • Ensure all software products, software options/modules and tools are approved for deployment and fully licensed prior to installation.
  • Escalate risks or issues to management and raise risk on the digital services IT risk register in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate a culture of proactive collaboration within the team, with the wider digital services and business.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in proactive and preventative monitoring of services.
  • Contribute metric and status information of services towards a reporting dashboard to capture operational KPIs such as patching status, capacity, utilisation and key metric information.
  • Identify and initiate service improvements and efficiencies using automation.
  • Ensure all deployments and services are document, maintained and stored in a content repository.
  • Ensure standard operating procedures are documented, regularly reviewed and updated as required.
  • Ensure systems and service integration data flows are documented and maintained.
  • Ensure accurate records of all managed and supported assets are kept.
  • Provide proactive day to day monitoring and housekeeping tasks.
  • Ensure software life cycle management, upgrade roadmaps, regular patching schedule to ensure systems are maintained at appropriate version and adhere to standards.
  • Contribute to updating and maintain a technology life cycle roadmap that capture end of support life and replacement.
  • Act as technical escalation for systems management and services associated to this role.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot general faults.
  • Provide technical support and advice for all Middleware and services related Incidents.
  • Act as technical adviser when peer reviewing internal or external work.
  • Liaise with third party suppliers to resolve any Middleware or services related issues as required.
  • Review and fulfil requests for ad hoc non-routine Middleware and services associated with the role.
  • Support the culture of continuous improvement by highlighting any process non-conformities and implement relevant corrective action to prevent further reoccurrences.
  • Plan and co-ordinate change related activities and when required.
  • Work with and collaborate with of 3rd party supplier, when required.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of new Middleware, gateway and associated software technologies based on either strategic or project requirements.
  • Contribute to out-of-hours support rota for specific Middleware platform related incidents.
  • Provide out-of-hours support for changes, upgrades, migrations and go-live of key IT systems.
  • Provide advice, mentoring, guidance and assistance to junior team members for the relevant technologies and to maintain standards.
  • Contribute to updating and maintaining a team knowledge database.
  • Ensure services are delivered, maintained and supported in line with ITIL.
  • Undertake training as and when required and be receptive to it.
  • Self-driven to maintain abreast and informed on current and related emerging technologies.

Skills, qualifications and experience:

  • Good understanding and knowledge of Operating systems, like Windows, Linux and Solaris.
  • Experience with NGINX, MS IIS, JBOSS, web Servers and application platforms, Apache, Tomcat, JAVA, WebLogic and .net framework.
  • Experience and knowledge of Globalscape Enhanced File Transfer (EFT) software.
  • Experience and knowledge of IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS) software.
  • Good understanding of security best practices, including principle of least privileges and access control.
  • Experience with deployment of high-availability Middleware, gateways and application platforms.
  • Experience and knowledge in Microsoft components and infrastructure software, associated management and monitoring capabilities.
  • Good experience with Scripting languages such as PowerShell, Shell and Bash scripts, Perl, Curl, etc.
  • Good knowledge and understand of networking technologies and protocols.
  • Good understanding of networks, subnets and IP Addressing.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of text search technologies and capabilities, eg Elasticsearch.
  • Good knowledge of dashboard technologies like elasticsearch Kabana, etc.
  • Good technical and implementation experience of security protocols and certificates.
  • Experience in TLS/SSL/PKI concepts and certificate deployment and renewal.
  • Experience and knowledge of Illumio micro-segmentation deployment and configuration of protect rules.
  • Technical knowledge of current virtualisation technologies and awareness of emerging capabilities.
  • Technical understanding of operational tools, automation and security protection technologies.
  • Experience of capacity planning and utilisation reporting.
  • Demonstrate methodical and analytical approach in troubleshooting, problem solving with a sense of ownership.
  • Experience with diagnostic and troubleshooting tools to resolve Middleware, gateway, application platform, web server, batch scheduling and other service faults and performance issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging Middleware platforms and technologies, software tools, performance and predictive analytics to improve proactive maintenance and support capabilities (both on-premises and cloud based).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to both technical and non-technical audiences including peers, managers and customers.
  • Maintain relationships and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team.

  • Experience of using helpdesk tools, Remedy an advantage, to manage Incidents, Problems and Change.
  • Understand of ITIL processes and standards.
  • Educated to degree level in an IT discipline, or equivalent.
